Back-Button Focus: What It Does and When to Use It
Learn how back-button focus separates autofocus from the shutter, how to configure it, and when it helps with action, portraits, and fixed focus distance.
How normal shutter-button autofocus works
By default, pressing the shutter halfway usually activates autofocus and metering. Pressing fully takes the photograph. This is simple, intuitive, and effective for most situations.
The drawback appears when you want to take a picture without asking the camera to focus again. A half-press may move focus away from the distance you deliberately established.
What back-button focus changes
With back-button focus, also called BBF, a rear AF-ON or customized button activates autofocus. The shutter button meters and releases the shutter but no longer starts AF.
Your hands divide the jobs:
- Thumb: starts, continues, or stops autofocus.
- Index finger: meters and takes the picture.
This separation is the entire concept. The lens, focus points, algorithm, and camera speed do not improve merely because a different button started them.
Why continuous AF becomes flexible
Many back-button users leave the camera in continuous autofocus—AF-C, AI Servo, or the brand equivalent.
- Hold AF-ON while a subject moves and the camera continues updating focus.
- Release AF-ON when the subject stops or when focus should remain at one distance.
- Press the shutter without refocusing for as many frames as needed.
This can imitate the practical behavior of both continuous tracking and focus lock without changing focus mode. The camera is still in continuous AF; your thumb decides whether it runs.
When back-button focus helps
Unpredictable action
For sports or wildlife, hold AF-ON while tracking, release if an obstacle passes between you and the subject, then resume when the view clears. The shutter remains ready for timing.
Waiting at a known distance
Focus on the point where a bird, runner, vehicle, or performer is expected to arrive. Release the button and wait. Taking the photograph will not make the camera search elsewhere.
Portraits and recomposition
Focus precisely on the eye, release AF-ON, and make several expressions without refocusing as long as neither camera nor subject changes distance. If distance changes, focus again.
Large recomposition at close range and wide aperture can shift the focus plane relative to the eye. Moving the focus point is often safer than focus-and-recompose.
Subjects behind foreground obstacles
Branches, fencing, players, or passing people can steal autofocus. Releasing the rear button preserves the current distance until the obstruction clears.
Tripod and static scenes
Autofocus once, release, and make a panorama, bracket, product sequence, or repeated composition without switching the lens to manual focus. Confirm the camera does not use a separate shutter-AF behavior in the selected mode.
Back-button focus is a timing control: press when the camera should focus, release when it should stop changing focus, and use the shutter independently.
When it may not help
Back-button focus is not automatically better for:
- casual photography where half-press AF is already reliable;
- one-handed operation;
- small bodies whose rear button is uncomfortable;
- people with thumb strain or limited mobility;
- cameras frequently handed to unfamiliar users; or
- advanced subject tracking that already begins and holds reliably from the shutter.
Some photographers prefer the shutter for ordinary autofocus and assign the rear button to eye AF, tracking, a registered focus area, or AF lock. Customization should solve an observed problem rather than follow a rule.
How to set it up
Menu names differ, but a complete setup usually has two parts:
- Assign AF-ON, AF activation, or an equivalent function to a rear button.
- Change the shutter half-press from metering + AF to metering only, disabling shutter-button autofocus.
If you do only step one, both buttons may focus. That can be useful for a hybrid setup, but it is not full separation.
Save the configuration to a custom shooting mode if the camera supports one. Menu paths change with firmware and model, so use the manual rather than copying another camera's steps blindly.
Choose the right focus mode
Back-button focus works with single or continuous AF, but continuous AF provides the classic hold-to-track, release-to-lock behavior.
Also choose a focus area appropriate to the subject:
- small point for a precise static detail;
- zone for action in a known area;
- tracking or subject detection for movement across the frame; and
- wide area when the camera can reliably identify the intended subject.
If the camera tracks the wrong person or background, back-button focus will not correct the selection. Move or change the focus area.
Focus priority and release priority
Cameras may let you choose whether the shutter waits for focus confirmation (focus priority) or takes the photograph immediately (release priority). These settings can behave differently in single and continuous AF.
With BBF, releasing AF-ON can leave the camera without current focus confirmation. A strict focus-priority setting may delay or block the shutter. If the camera will not fire, inspect release/focus priority and AF lock behavior before assuming it is broken.
Autofocus and exposure lock are separate
Half-pressing the shutter may still start metering, and it may or may not lock exposure. AF-ON may also be linked to metering on some cameras.
Decide deliberately whether exposure should follow composition, lock with the shutter, lock with AE-L, or remain fixed in Manual mode. Back-button focus separates AF from release; it does not automatically configure exposure behavior.
Back-button focus and subject detection
On a modern mirrorless camera, AF-ON can start face, eye, animal, vehicle, or general subject tracking. You can also assign a second rear button to a different AF area or detection mode.
For example:
- AF-ON activates a zone for predictable action;
- another button activates whole-frame eye detection; and
- the shutter releases without changing either choice.
This can be more useful than the old idea that one button simply replaces the shutter half-press.
Back-button focus does not lock subject position
When you release AF-ON, the lens stays at its last focus distance. It does not remain attached to a subject that moves closer or farther. If the subject distance changes, focus is no longer correct.
Depth of field can hide small changes at narrow apertures or long distances. At close range and a wide aperture, even a slight movement matters.
Practice before relying on it
- Photograph a static object. Focus with AF-ON, release, and take several frames without refocusing.
- Move closer and verify that the shutter does not correct the now-wrong focus.
- Track a walking person while holding AF-ON in continuous AF.
- Release as an obstruction passes, then press again when the subject returns.
- Turn the camera off and on, switch custom modes, and confirm the setup remains active.
Review images at high magnification and check where the focus point landed. Use the beginner camera guide if focus modes and areas are still unfamiliar.
Common mistakes
- Leaving shutter AF active unintentionally. Half-press then overrides the separation.
- Releasing AF-ON while the subject keeps moving. Focus stays at the old distance.
- Blaming BBF for a wrong focus area. Button assignment and subject selection are different decisions.
- Changing configuration before important work. New muscle memory needs practice.
- Assuming the camera is broken when it will not fire. Check focus/release priority.
- Forgetting another person will use the camera. Restore shutter AF or explain the rear control.
Back-button focus works in any PASM exposure mode; focus activation and exposure mode are independent.
